Athol Road Primary School - East Campus
Southvale Language Centre
Southvale Primary School has a strong emphasis on supporting the language development of all students through the following programs:
1.ORACY IN THE CLASSROOM (OinC): in-classroom intervention program targeting the language and literacy development of all students across the school. This is carried out in small groups to ensure that the individual learning needs of each student are closely met.
2.SPEECH PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT PROGRAM (SPA): 1:1 intervention programs for students identified to present with severe language difficulties. Programs are designed and monitored by the school Speech Pathologist and implemented by trained integration aides.
3.SOCIAL SKILL GROUPS: small group programs for students identified to experience social skill or integration difficulties. This program aims to support students to develop confidence, their social skills and form meaningful relationships with their peers.
4.SMART WORDS: spelling program with a strong focus on the development of language skills.
5. PARENT SUPPORT PROGRAMS: we conduct the ‘Signposts’ parenting program. This program supports parents of students with disabilities to support their child’s development and manage challenging behaviors.
7. LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMS: implemented for students who require assistance to develop life skills such as self care, safety awareness, basic problem solving, money handling and food preparation.
8. LET’S TALK PREP PROGRAM: in-classroom program targeting the language development of children through the medium of play.
9. ASSESSMENT: all children’s language skills are screened when they first enter the school. For prospective Prep students this screening process is provided prior to the commencement of the school year. All students identified to have language difficulties are then formally assessed and Individual Learning Plans are developed in order to support the individual child and their needs.
At the end of each school year, all students are assessed by the Speech Pathologist to identify level of progress and language learning needs for the following school year.
